Each year ANCOR, a national, nonprofit trade association representing more than 1000 private community providers of services to people with disabilities, (http://ancor.org/) awards one Direct Support Professional in each state and one DSP of the Year Award for the country. Dawn Gardner, Direct Support Professional for WCI – Work, Community, Independence in Waltham, was this year’s award recipient for the state of Massachusetts. She was recognized on Wednesday, May 3rd, in a ceremony at the 2017 ANCOR Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
DSPs nominated for this award build a close, trusted relationship with an individual with disabilities and assist them not only with their personal needs on a daily basis, but connect them to friends, family and their community. Dawn was nominated for fulfilling all of these qualities, as well as going above and beyond the expectations of her position.
Dawn facilitated one Individual’s dream to see “The Beatles” in concert, arranging for her to meet Sir Paul McCartney and his band at Fenway Park. She also accompanied an Individual on a vacation to Alaska, ensuring one of her life’s goals was fulfilled. Dawn has helped others enjoy new and interesting community experiences that previously they would not have thought to enjoy.
“Dawn is an exemplary Direct Support Professional,” said Nancy Silver Hargreaves, President and CEO of WCI. She assesses each Individual’s interests, then supports each person to meet their goals and dreams. We couldn’t be prouder of everything Dawn has accomplished!”
